Yulia Lipnitskaia’s Long Program

(ACK I forgot to post last night, zomg, one weekend that I miss my BEDA goals and I’m patchy for the rest of the month??)

Easily, my favorite winter Olympic sport is figure skating.

Why am I talking about the winter Olympics months after they ended? I don’t know. BUT I do know that yesterday, I found some comfort in re-watching Yulia Lipnitskaia’s long program routine. Set to the theme from Schindler’s List, it’s one of the most spectacular figure skating routines I’ve ever seen. She’s a very mature skater, considering she’s only 15 years old. (!!!) You can see it in her face. I liked her far better than Olympic gold medalist Adelina Sotnikova because I really did feel that Yulia was more mature and more skilled as a skater, although Adelina was more athletic. (I don’t want to talk about how disappointed I am that Yuna Kim didn’t get gold. I’m supposed to move past that.)

This scoring is gorgeous, and I believe she picked it herself.  The outfit also evokes imagery from the film. I’m particularly impressed with Yulia’s spins, which she has become well-known for and for good reason.

She’s a great skater, and she was a favorite for gold for Sochi. It was unfortunate that she, along with many of the skaters this year, stumbled and fell during her long program. But she made it count here, at the European Figure Skating Championship.

Songs to Stay On

I have 5 radio stations that I switch back and forth between when I drive. (Not including my 2 classical music stations.) Often, what makes me change the station is either an irritating commercial or a song that I can’t stand/am tired of.  I’ll stay on a station if nothing else is better.

OR.
If one of these songs comes on. When one of these songs comes on, I immediately crank up the volume and sit back to enjoy. I will never switch off these songs:

  • “The Worst” – Jhené Aiko
  • “Body Party” – Ciara
  • “Lotus Flower Bomb” – Wale (I’m seeing Wale perform live in a few weeks!!)
  • “Party” – Beyoncé ft. J. Cole
  • “Marvin’s Room” – Drake

Also “Marvin’s Room (Can’t Do Better)” – JoJo
  • “Work Out” – J. Cole
  • “Don’t Stop the Music” – Rihanna
  • “SexyBack” – Justin Timberlake
  • “Toxic” – Britney Spears

NOTE: These are car radio picks. I would include other songs that I would never dream of switching away from, but they don’t really get airtime on the radio. Some of these songs don’t get much play anymore, but every now and then I’ll still hear them. A testament to their staying power, I think.

I will think of more later, but I think you guys may see that I have a preferred genre for songs that I stay on… (Although I definitely veered away from that towards the end of this list XD) I will definitely come back with more of these as I remember them.

What song do you NEVER switch away from and/or turn UP when you’re listening to the radio/Pandora/etc.?

Slow Dance Songs [playlist]

Prematurely hot weather always reminds me of certain summer feelings. Today, it reminded me of things like prom, summer camp dances, and driving home after a fun evening with friends.

Here are a couple of slow dance songs that I thought of today. Some of them have memories of specific slow dances I shared with someone, but not all of them are. I haven’t told the boys I danced with that I always think of them when I hear these songs, but I secretly hope that they think of me — even if for just a fleeting moment — when they hear them, too.

I don’t want to feel lonely thinking about slow dances. I like them because, as much as I love grooving out on the dancefloor, sometimes you need a break. Sometimes you get caught up over whether you’re holding someone or not during this break.

This is not the definitive list and I’ll be adding to it as time goes by. I’ll let you know when I do, but for now, here is a little playlist.

Earth Angel | The Penguins // In Your Eyes | Peter Gabriel // Can’t Help Falling in Love | Elvis Presley // At Last | Etta James // Smoke Gets In Your Eyes | The Platters // The Way You Look Tonight | Frank Sinatra // Take My Breath Away | Berlin //

Enjoy!

Name the movies that some of these songs come from!
What’s a slow dance song that hold a special memory for you?

Bonus question: have you seen the movie where I got the still for the playlist image?

21 Things You Learn From Living In The DMV

Chelsea Fagan writes a lot of truth here. I highly recommend a visit, not only to DC but to the greater DMV so you can just take it all in.
